Award-Winning Author Rudy Ruiz Named to Joyce Carol Oates Prize Long List

Acclaimed writer Rudy Ruiz earns prestigious literary recognition in advance of spring 2025 appearances.

NEW YORK, March 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Award-winning author Rudy Ruiz has been named to the long list for the prestigious Joyce Carol Oates Prize, further cementing his place among America’s most vital and vibrant literary voices. The recognition comes as Ruiz prepares for a series of high-profile literary events across the country this spring.

Ruiz, a bilingual native of the U.S.-Mexico border, is the author of multiple acclaimed works including The Resurrection of Fulgencio Ramirez, Valley of Shadows, and his newest novel, The Border Between Us. His writing explores the complexities of immigration, cultural identity, and the pursuit of the American dream through compelling narratives that blend history, politics, and personal experience.

“Being long-listed for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize is a tremendous honor,” says Ruiz. “I’m grateful that my work resonates with readers and continues to contribute to important conversations about borders, both literal and metaphorical, in American life.”

The Joyce Carol Oates Prize recognizes mid-career authors of fiction whose work has demonstrated exceptional merit and reveals significant growth from book to book. The honor celebrates writers who explore the human condition in original and powerful ways.

Readers will have multiple opportunities to engage with Ruiz’s work this spring at literary festivals across the country:

  • Tucson Festival of Books (March 16, 2025): Ruiz will appear on two panels, “El Sueño Americano,” exploring immigration narratives, and “The Ties That Bind,” examining intergenerational trauma through fiction and nonfiction.
  • National Latino Book Club (Late March 2025): Ruiz’s novel will be featured as the Book of the Month, connecting his work with readers across the country.
  • San Antonio Book Festival (April 2025): Ruiz returns to his home state of Texas to participate in one of the region’s premier literary events.
  • Annapolis Book Festival (May 2025): Continuing his national tour, Ruiz will appear in two panels at this celebrated D.C.-area literary gathering, including “Windows and Mirrors: The Power of Representation in Literature.”

Ruiz’s accolades include the Texas Institute of Letters Jesse H. Jones Award for Best Book of Fiction, the Gulf Coast Prize in Fiction, and multiple International Latino Book Awards. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Harvard University, and currently divides his time between New England and Texas, where he lives with his wife and children.
